[rebel-ramble] Ramble Early start

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

That was my thought, Ken !

Soggy tents aren't a lot of fun ! ;-)

It looks like the rain is almost AT Manistique right now !
It's really hard to tell where it's going - I'm hoping the
weak high will move it North, and we'll get a window
early tomorrow afternoon ....

At the moment, we're carrying on with plans to hit
the BBQ tonight & set off in the morning - 10:30-ish, but we'll likely
head straight for Gore Bay - never have managed to get
to Killarney anyway !! :-(

If it looks possible, we'll try to cross tomorrow (Tuesday)
and get to Manistique .... might be 1 or 2 o'clock ... so
still time for those going to Killarney - if they're early !

If it looks Reallllllyyyyy Grizzly, maybe we'll just stay here
in Brampton for another day (or 2 :-( )....

Will check the radar & satellites in the morning and
post here, whichever we decide ! Also, will start updating
the Ramble Phone - (905) 457-5238 after we figure it out.
If you get a message without the update, this is the alternate
- "line busy", message - just try again !

Bob,

Will we still need copies of the Calgary area map in the Calgary
vicinity? How many at a guess? My newest map date is Feb 2006 so it is
out of date but the newest available here.

Guys will need some copy of the Calgary map as far as about Vernon
anyway so these will only be useful for people who have ancient maps -
pre-2004. I have a few very old maps which could be contributed if
someone is really stuck.

[rebel-ramble] Ramble Early start

EVERYBODY 'missed ' the BBQ !!

This is THE worst Ramble ever for communication !!

It's hard to organize when nobody is communicating .....
Don't know who is doing what, and when ... hear things 'second hand',
sometimes .... Except for Ken, & Garry, and Brian ...

We'll be on 122.75 ..... but <WE> won't be getting away until
later in the day, if at all -- installed a new battery today, charged for
6 hours, and tried to taxi down to wash the Rebel .... not enough juice
to turn the prop once !!! :-( Back to the shop tomorrow morning -
KILLLLLLL !!!!!!

Looks like we will get a clear pass through tomorrow .... even
if we don't get to cross until 5 pm .... :-(

Will post final thoughts in the morning after yet another
weather check .... Right now, planning on heading out in
the afternoon (if we can get the old battery back in & working),
to Gore Bay - and on to Manistique IF the weather permits.
If weather doesn't look good, we'll stay here until Thursday,
it looks like ... !

If we're going from Gore Bay, we'll have a map session there,
and go through all the steps for crossing together, as soon as
we can.

Sorry - just a <BIT> tired & grumpy !!

Hi Ken, I missed it as well - still doing things to get ready.
Hope to leave Tally-ho around 10:30.

I think everyone uses 122.75 for air to air. (please correct if I'm
wrong!!!)
What time are you leaving Guelph?

I just came in from the hanger as well. for a bunch a guys that have been
planning this for months, it is funny how we are all still getting ready.
it is funny, right? it may as well be.
anyway, let's see what morning brings.
looks like 30% chance of showers (that's 70% chance of no showers!)
I hope to depart around 11am, which should put me in Gore bay about the same
time
see you on 122.75

I'm willing to risk spending an extra day in Manistique but I'm

Hi guys, sorry you're having trouble with your battery Bob. I'm sure it will
work out in the morning. Also Gore Bay is only showing a 20% chance of
showers on Wednesday and 30 tomorrow evening. It certainly sounds better
over there than Barrie or Brampton.

We do appreciate your effort - so keep smiling!!!

[rebel-ramble] Ramble Early start

Post by Ken » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

Thank you but I don't think Wingham is really any closer than Guelph and
I'm so full right now that I'll have to take off or go drain some before
it warms up today ;)
I should be fine. Now we just need that rooster to visit Bob but good
on him if he managed to sleep in. Looks like decent VFR at the moment
but I'll go with Bob's decision on whether to launch. I'd guess that
it's go today or possibly get delayed here for up to two days...

One thing about sealed AGM batteries is that they can sit on the shelf
for a couple of years and still start an engine. I wasted a couple of
days trying to program maps on the new gps that took a month to receive.
Not sure I accomplished much but hey a new toy has to be played with...
Never did get a new database unlocked. This copy protection BS has
gone a bit far such that I don't think I'd recommend this unit.

Ok Ken.
Yes, I have to admit that I am jealous of Bob and his ability to sleep in.
One of my objectives on this trip is to get him to show me how to do that!

Bob Patterson

[rebel-ramble] Ramble Early start

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

MMMmmmmmmm ! Roasted rooster !!! :-)

I really don't like what I see out the window - been looking
since 6:15 .... a BIG chunk o' that there Nimble Stratus stuff ....

Here's a couple of radar sites - have a peek ....

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/in ... tml?id=ONT

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/in ... tml?id=wso

There's a solid line between us and Manistique ... and
Wiarton is always soggy ....

We're carrying on getting ready - but it looks a bit scarey
right now ....

Might work well for Ken to head up to Wingham ... easy to
scoot back to Guelph if it gets uglier, but closer to the north
if it doesn't ...

Will check back here in a couple of hours ...

Anybody have a cell phone - if you get to Gore Bay, we
can keep you posted....

OK we'll hang tight for awhile unless someone else wants to head off in
which case we'll give it a try.
THe line west of Sault looks pretty light so far but it could easilly
build to below VFR later. THe stuff SW of Lake Huron may move over and
block the way to Wiarton later.
My cell is 519-993-9950 and I'll actually turn it on (I seldom do) if we
get anywhere.
