[rebel-ramble] Ramble '09 Possibility ...

Post by Ron Shannon » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

I vote for:

1) continue as started, so as not to preclude Oshkosh, and

2) heavy lobbying to allow US sport pilots to fly their Canadian planes in
the CA part of the route!

I sure hope to be flying and able to join at least any US leg.

Hi Ramblers !

As some of you know, we started planning a big Ramble
to Both Coasts for 2009, to celebrate 100 years of aviation

There have been some suggestions that maybe we should
just join in with John Lovelace (Wings over Canada) on his
trip. Here's his site :
http://www.johnlovelace.com/flight2009/intro.html

Looks like his dates are July 17 - 28th. This conflicts
with Oshkosh, so we're out. Also, looks like some of
the legs are 'way too long, and over very rough country -
although that may be just 'artistic licence' ....

Anyway, looking for some feedback - what are the thoughts
out there ??? Should we continue as we started, join John,
or just scrap it for 2009, considering the economy ?????

[rebel-ramble] Ramble '09 Possibility ...

Post by Walter Klatt » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

I say for sure go ahead with the 09 Ramble. The economy should be in high
gear again by that time, and with any luck, fuel prices will stay down, or
maybe go even lower. Also, with the Cdn buck down to 82 cents and headed
lower, all you yanks should take advantage of that too, and come up to
Canada, to join in on the 100 years Canadian Flight celebrations. You don't
want to miss this one.

Plus we can all feel better, knowing that we are doing our part to end the
recession.

Especially you Ron, I'm sure you must be doing some serious buying and
trading these days, so you should be even richer by next summer.

Oh, and Bob, just think of all the Rebels and Mooses, along with a couple
Elites that you will be able to sell on that Ramble...

Bob,
I agree with Walter and Ron, as you know, I plan on coming over anyway
but missing out on the ramble is not part of the plan :-)

[rebel-ramble] Ramble '09 Possibility ...

Personally I have little interest in being part of Wings over Canada. I
don't know much about them but filming tends to be tedious. Of course I
never really wanted my "10 seconds of fame" either...

I suspect that few folks with similar interests to me will pay a $150.
administrative fee to join them for a day or two and darn few will
commit to a coast to coast trip (and the return trip home). Shouldn't
the film company be covering administrative costs?? Wouldn't be the
first time I was wrong though ;)

It's a good bet that the economy will be slumping badly this summer
which actually may be a good time to travel if one can afford it.

[rebel-ramble] Ramble '09 Possibility ...

I've been on a few local Wings Over Canada trips, and they were actually a
lot of fun. The filming was very adhoc, nothing scripted or planned, and you
never knew exactly what would be on the episode until it came out. The
episodes are usually made up of clips from many different trips. John is a
pretty fun guy, full of knowledge, and is very flexible on these outings,
and sort of makes it up as we go. Very much like our own Rambles, actually.

Haven't talked to John for a while, but I know he sold the show and his
production company, so not sure exactly what his involvement is now. Another
local guy, Darren, is now doing it, and would expect him to be involved next
summer as well. I will have to try and find out more.

But knowing those guys, they are very informal, and I am sure anyone can
join in portions, drop out, or do what they want.
