that happy to help plan any of these trips. It's exactly the type of flying
that I had in mind for my retirement.

you, Jim Cole, Walter Klatt, John Peterson, Bob Patterson, Ted Waltman,
Ron Shannon and thats just off the rebel list. Interest isn't a
commitment but its a start and I can't imagine a more interesting trip.
The only ramblers from last summer not crazy enough to say they're
interested yet are Bryan and Ken.

Ditto the Hi's to Jim, Tom & Walter, all people I hope to see again, even
before this excursion. With everyone else, it would have to be a fun trip.

I want to echo Garry's recommendation of Erickson's _True North_ book. If
you're sitting on the fence about this proposed adventure, and don't want to
be persuaded into joining, don't read the book! :-) Otherwise, you'll find
it very inspiring, and a great read.

Ken can't think that far ahead...

Although we hope to get down to Summerside PEI immediately before or
after the Ramble this summer. Don't know if they still have reasonable
accomodation in the former military houses. Maybe Sun'n Fun this Spring
too.

Actually I spent the summer of 1975 up North above and West of Hudson's
Bay. Baker Lake, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay, Spence Bay, etc. Still
have some Eskimo carvings. A large and beautiful land. Friendly natives
especially in the dry (no booze) settlements. Ridiculously expensive
gas (and everything else) when you could get it. 24 hours of daylight.
Really big Polar Bears. They would stand up and swat at airplanes as if
they were mosquitos! Despite being a protected species, the natives said
to start shooting immediately because they'd cover at least 50 feet
after they were fatally injured. No trees. Lots of Eskers (gravel
ridges) that can be landed on so I think I'd rather be on wheels than
floats. Logistics will be a challenge especially in a Rebel with only a
couple of hundred pounds of baggage available. GPS will sure help.
Weather info was scarce back then. I seem to recall things not changing
a whole lot once you got North of Churchill and Churchill isn't all that
far North. My guess is that the cost of such a trip will be staggering...

Interesting trip that. I'm sure it was paid for by the owners of the
airplane. : )

I am somewhat concerned about the cost of this venture. The planning
portion will suss that out for sure. Concerns about fuel and expense are
genuine on this one - part of the long lead time.

You will at least be an asset in planning this since you've been there,
even if you think you won't come.

I suspect the wx info is just as scarce today. Not enough traffic for
those guys to worry much about.

least with our grizzlies here in BC, there are trees to climb. But in the
open tundra, you couldn't even hide from them...

I will have to get that book, Garry. Does Chapters carry it, or where would
I find it?

Isn't June kind of early for that far north? Will there be enough water for
a floatplane? I can't get into some of our alpine lakes here until July.

Not sure about the book in Canada - Ron gave it to me in October.

The only reason I suggested June is less bugs. I did the Alaska trip in
June of 1990 and saw nary a bug, but the field strawberries were
delicious. I will check with Myles Cane who is living up in Yellowknife
and flies all over up there about timing.

And yep, big polar bears. Wouldn't make any difference if there were
trees - they would just stand up and pluck you out of the tops - Texas
has nothing on the north. Shoot first - negotiate later.

I've found that chapter 1 is way too often a snoozer for such a decision
so I always go a bit farther than that. You can do it Wayne. Just start
at chapter 2.

A phone call where available should give access to satellite pic info
nowadays. Also I believe we have paid a couple of billion $ to bring
high speed internet to the arctic so I'd expect the wx situation to
have improved..

I am somewhat concerned about the cost of this venture. The planning
portion will suss that out for sure. Concerns about fuel and expense are
genuine on this one - part of the long lead time.

You will at least be an asset in planning this since you've been there,
even if you think you won't come.

I suspect the wx info is just as scarce today. Not enough traffic for
those guys to worry much about.
