Ramble map fiasco !!

Hi Ramblers !

Well, as some of you already know, Nav Canada, better
known as "Nav Scam", have screwed up air safety AGAIN,
in a big way !! Nav Canada is a private company that took
over the management of airspace in Canada a few years ago,
when the government sold it off.

Nav Scam took over the management of the printing
of all aviation maps in Canada - and contracted it out ....
a great disaster to pilots !

We have ordered all of the maps for the Ramble, with
a blanket order set up BACK IN APRIL --- but now, we CAN'T
GET 2 of the maps we need !! The OLD Winnipeg VNC, and
the Calgary VTA are NO LONGER in stock - and the NEW ones
won't be printed until MAYBEEE.... mid-July !!!

HOW are we supposed to LEGALLY fly across Manitoba,
AND SAFELY avoid airpace conflicts around Calgary ??!!!

In the short term, any of you who have maps - current or not -
could you please make photocopies (I know - not legal either ...)
preferrably COLOUR copies, of at least the areas around our
projected stops -- Piney, Lyncrest, Killarney, (Antler - waypoint),
and maybe on to Carlyle, SK ... ???? If we all have at least
copies, we'll have SOME backup. Perhaps getting provincial
maps from the CAA Motor League might be a good idea,
for members - at least one Rambler in the past did that !
A couple of extra copies for others would be great.

I strongly recommend that everyone be sure they have
the latest updates to their GPS databases !!! We'll be taking
an AvMap EKP-IV GPS, with 7" display, and terrain ($1,499 CAN
at Westronics in Brampton...) - it's almost like having a map in
your lap ! It looks like the GPS will have to be our guide to
keeping outside and/or below the airspace rings at Calgary.
We'll also try to get our hands on some old Winnipeg VNC's -
you could all try your local flying clubs, or maybe places like
Aviation World .... They're more expensive than VIP, but
they MIGHT have some old stock.

Maybe somewhere there's a possible class action suit
for 'endangering air space safety', or something ....
awaiting Nav Scam .... :-(

There AUGHT to be !

We've often joked that the idea of the Ramble was to
show that it was still possible to fly across the country like
the old barnstormers did - "with just a clean windshield and
a Esso road map" .... Now it looks like we'll really have to
do it !!
