[rebel-ramble] border crossing without transponders

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

Hi Garry !

No problem ! They are still working, and we've added the
International Peace Garden (Dunseith) to the list - it's about
2 hours west of Piney, and open 24-7 .... no fuel or facilities,
just customs, but handy in a pinch. We needed it because
Piney CLOSED at 5 PM !!! :-(
May be open later now ...

A transponder will still be the last thing I'd buy - better
to have a good GPS, so <I> know where I am ..... ;-)
There is a Waiver that you can apply for, to allow crossing
without a transponder - it will soooon available on the
Ramble web site .... It must be faxed in, and they need at
least 7 days notice ... We usually cross with ONE aircraft
with a transponder, filing a flight plan as a "flight of 12",
or whatever number we are. This worked everywhere
except BC, where, I guess, the Snowbirds never come to
visit .... ;-) (Nobody had heard of this method ...
and they insisted on separate flight plans ! )

Still indefinite on numbers of aircraft - especially by that
leg. Likely in the 10 - 20 range, if we're lucky ! Certainly,
more Rebels than ever !! :-)

Bob,

I still have no transponder in FOKM. Last summer I used the border
crossing at Del Bonita to "drive across the border". In this case one
must not file a flight plan because they will yell at you that you need
a transponder when you are not actually crossing in any way they define
as requiring a transponder.

In any event, to your knowledge is this dodge still working and workable
for my return home thru Piney or Coutts or Del Bonita after OSH?

How many planes are you expecting in the flight from Chilliwack to
Arlington?

Garry

[rebel-ramble] border crossing without transponders

Hi Bob,

If it doesn't work in BC how do we get from Chilliwack to Arlington?

The problem with the waiver seems to be that you have to stipulate your
entire itinerary in the USA and may not deviate from it. I used that
method for Arlington last year but cannot see it working for the trip to
OSH. Is there a workable way to fill it in to give flexibility in the USA?

I've got the good Avmap GPS.

[rebel-ramble] border crossing without transponders

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

Hi Garry !

Wellllll....... it didn't work in '03 --- I'm hoping that they have
figured it out by now... :-)

I think the thing with the waiver is just to ask for the
itinerary for THAT range of dates ...
i.e. July 10 - 15 , Chilliwack to Arlington
(the range gives a cushion for weather and other delays)
That IS the itinerary for that portion of the trip !
Hope that will work - I've had a call in for several days
now -- hope to have more info sooooon ......

Looks like I'll have an AvMap EKP-IV GPS, as well !
I can't get updates for my DigiFly anymore - the EEPROM
burner they use died, and nobody else can do it !!! :-(

Okay. Default assumption is that it won't work this year. I will get the
waiver for Arlington only. Looking forward to hearing how yours went.
Thanks.

[rebel-ramble] border crossing without transponders

Post by Inglis Family » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

I used the waiver to go to Oshkosh two years ago, and stipulated a date of
return with a 'weather dependent' behind the requested date.
I would suggest doing that.

When crossing and asked by ATC to assign a transponder code, you just
announce 'negative on transponder, have waiver, and that was it.
At no time was I asked for any actual documentation at either end.

I think they have more important things to worry about than us, and they
know it!

When I did it for Arlington last year, they required the code off the
authorization. Bob knows how we did it a few years ago out of Brampton
and it worked not much different from what you say, but into Bellingham
from Chilliwack last July it was fairly rigorous.
