[rebel-ramble] RR07 - amphibs or wheels

Hi Bob !

When heading West, we don't go through Northern Ontario - because
of all that water !! ;-) We go south of Lake Superior - there are
a lot more airports & good places to land .... of course, this
now means we will ALL need passports after January, 2007. :-(
And at least one aircraft in the lead with a transponder - and/or
transponder waiver letters - more on this later. :-(
I suspect tourism to the U.S. is going to drop considerably soon !

If it's not too big a chore, I guess I'd prefer to do the trip
on wheels - mostly because that would leave a lot more baggage
allowance. :-) We have had a wide variety of airplanes, and the
airports we usually stop at are all paved, with more runway than
needed for most aircraft, although we have had side trips to grass
strips on occasion, with no problems. I like grass strips ! :-)
Lyncrest (Winnipeg) has 2 very nice grass runways ... and lots
of grass for camping. :-)

The camera is coming by Canada Post - let me know if it doesn't
appear by Tuesday or so - it's insured, so we have a tracking number.

No big problem, either way ! There is a short-cut or 2 you might
take if on floats, while the rest of us are flying IFRRRR-ABIP ...
(I Follow Roads, Rivers, RailRoads,- And Busses in a Pinch) ;-)

You might find it handy to have that extra couple of hundred pounds
of useful load, though -- and a bit of practice never hurts ! ;-)

There are spots where we take off & climb from about 2,500 ft. to
8,500 ft. within about a 10 mile stretch - or circle in the valley to
get up there. One hot afternoon, the Rebel on wheels, fully loaded,
scrambled up in about 10 - 15 minutes - there was a C-172 that took
45 minutes ! (of course, there was some sightseeing, as well ... ) ;-)

We're going to have a LOT of fun ! :-)

Bob, I know you can probably get some tail dragger time in Parry Sound
or on your own plane if you convert - but I thought I would let you know
that you can also join the Collingwood Classic Aircraft Foundation and
for $900 plus a $75 membership fee you get something like 20 hours in
their Fleet Canuck or Champ. Also if you have 20 hours of tail
dragger, for $1000 you get 10 hours on the Tigermoth. A great way to
support a good group and also have some fun in a classic airplane.

thanks for the info guys part of the reason to make a temporary switch
would be to do some ski flying this winter

it is a bit of a project though!! i dug out all my parts yesterday i
