Winkler's Ready

Post by Jack Neima » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Hi all!

Lianne and I flew over to Winkler last evening. It was such a beautiful night we just had to fly. They have a great little Club house and LOTS of grass area for camping. DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR INSECT REPELLANT! There's lots of "skeeters" around here. Flew 4 or 5 hours so far this long weekend and it's still only Monday morning. The airplane is a mess of smashed bugs, you can hardly see out the windshield. I have to go out this morning to see if I can clean it up.

On the cleanup subject, I've done a fair bit of "fly camping" over the past few years and it's always a problem keeping the airplane reasonably clean, especially the windshield. Does anyone have a suggestion of what to carry aboard to keep ahead of this sticky problem?

Bob, sounds like you're pretty well prepared for the promotional aspects of the trip. I know you want to spread the word about the importance of general aviation. Did you give any thought to preparing a little "press kit", something you could hand out to anyone interested in who we are and what we're doing? That way you'd save having to repeat yourself all the time and a consistant message would always get out. I think the press would be interested in the background stuff but they're also always looking for the human interest side so you could talk about who the participants are, where they come from, previous Rambles, that sort of thing. In my experience reporters always like to receive this kind of hand out because it makes their job so much easier. Another benefit would be that if someone from the press isn't there then a local representative of the flying club or whatever could pass on the press kit along with a snap shot of crowd assembeled on the field. Just an idea.

Almost time to start listening for long range forecasts........... :-)

See ya soon!

Winkler's Ready

We've been a little worried about all the rain EVERYWHERE !! Suspected
there's be LOTS of skeeters - well stocked on small spray pump bottles
of high DEET spray. Actually considered that maybe we might need the
floats ! :-) Guess there'll be dry spots for tenting .... (maybe
inside the hangars !! ;-) )

The best stuff I've found for windshields is a white cream cleaner
from LP Aero Plastics. They also have a clear spray in a can which works
well, but the liquid is my choice for heavier duty. Many pilot shops
stock this now, and you can get it at OSH and Sun 'n Fun - we usually
pick up a bottle at each ... It's possible you could order it direct,
or from Murphy, since LP supply them with Plexi.

Many years ago, used Maguires (??) - it always got lumpy &
streaky ... was SO pleased to find LP !!

A press kit would be a great idea, but .... time is always
limited, AND .. we don't know who's coming until they show up !! :-)
We do try to take along brochures for RAA and COPA, if there's room,
and have a few of the Ramble flyers to hand out as well, but ...
well, the reporters just have to do a little 'leg work' and TALK to
the Ramblers. This is good for everybody, as they usually find some
local spin to the story !! One thing we like is to get copies of
the published articles (hardly EVER happens !).

We are hoping everybody will take some personal notes & photos on
the trip, so we can copy them at Oshkosh to put together an article
for EAA Experimenter, as well as RAA, COPA, and elsewhere :-)

The forecast shows clearing on Thursday, then GREAT FLYING WEATHER
for the next 3 weeks !!! ;-) ;-) (fingers crossed - to match eyes ! )

See you sooooooon !!
....bobp & Anna
