Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Hi Ramblers !!

Everything is ready (except us... ;-) ) for the Ramble
Warm-Up Weekend fly-in at Gore Bay Airport on Manitoulin Island,
on June 24/25.

The weather doesn't look too great, but we should be able to get
there for the Saturday Lunch BBQ. If Sunday really looks bad, maybe
we'll just head back home on Saturday afternoon ...

In any case, DON'T PUSH IT !! If you're not comfortable with
the visibility, or the look of the weather, just head home !! It's
not THAT important ....

Hope to see you at Gore Bay, but, if not, we'll all get together
at Brampton on July 7th, party, and head out in the morning on our
great adventure !!

.....bobp & Anna

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by C. Van » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Once upon a time, our great Rumble leader (that's you Bob) sayeth to one and
all !!!!!!!! = Go forth to Gore Bay and I Shalt greet you !!!!!

As a good desciple and follower of our great guru (that's you again Bob) I
got up at the crack of dawn (around 10 O 'clock or so) and packed up my
trusty steed (read my decrepit 601) and set forth into the wilderness of
navigating myself to that place called Gored Bay on the island of Many
Tools (I think someone named the place for the many fools who settled there
originally)
and Lo and Behold, a miracle happened!!! I got to the right place!!!! =
I think just mayby my G P S finally figured out that it should not pay any
attention to me and just guide me on the right and true path in spite of my
protestations.

Anyhow, the place was absolutely swarming with air travellers=(too bad 99%
of the air travellers were mosquitos and bees) Besides myself, I counted
four other aircraft on the tarmac. l
That by the way, gave me my first clue as to where my great Rabble leader
(that's you again Bob)was to be found(probably still in bed?) I was asked
by the good people at Gore Bay if I was staying the night, But I graciously
declined their invitation pleading a sense of loss and loneliness (this is
getting sickening) at
having to camp out all by my lonesome.
To end my tale of woe and dejection, I thereby hopped in my lowly steed,
and proceeded to again exercise my navigation skills till I was thoroughly
lost and turned to my good buddy G P S to get me hence back to Midland,
bucking thirty mile an hour headwinds, and a number of showers and the odd
thundercloud.
Arriving safely on the tarmac at Midland , my first (and only) thought was
to compile this missive to you, Glorious leader (that's you again Bob) to
let you know that when the going gets tough, you can always depend on a
good old Ch601 ZENAIR to back up any of the Murphies that might need some
help on the way to the West.

Regards!!!!

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Congratulations !! You made it !!!

There was something about the 30 - 60 mph winds, thunderclouds,
and showers that made us think that <maybe> we should stay at home !!

Actually, <I> wanted to leap up at the crack of 10, and fly
off into the darkening sky, but <my wife> thought "This is NOT
'A Good Thing'(TM) " !! So, being an obedient husband ....

Well, actually, I persuaded her to come for a 'local flight'
at noon, since the rain wasn't TOO heavy - we went a little past
Orangeville before she admitted that ... welllll, mayyybeee we <could>
have made it after all. But it was too late - by the time we went back
to load our stuff into the Rebel, it was raining in ernest -
(Brampton, too, ... and heavily ;-) )

Sadly, we adjourned to the Wings Restaurant at Brampton Airport,
with a couple of other grounded Ramblers, to drown our sorrows in their
coffee, and lasagna, and garlic bread, and ...

We <might> try again in the morning - <IF> it's not raining
<too> hard again !! Sounds like they might have the BBQ going again
tomorrow, if only 4 people got there today !! (LOT'S of burgers
left over !! :-) )

Things are looking good for the 7th !! Brampton are having
their Pre-Oshkosh BBQ at 7 pm, and an Oshkosh arrival procedures
briefing at 8 or 8:30, so we can sit in and learn all about the
latest procedures & tips ..... Of course, we might get to OSH
<before> a lot of the BFC folks ! :-) Heck, they're not even
leaving for another 2 weeks !!! :-)

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Hi Ramblers !!

Well - it could have been a great weekend !! The weather guys
were wrong, again !!

Sunday was a BEAUTIFUL day at Gore Bay - clear, sunny, 26 degrees !!
And Anna & I were there ALL ALONE ..... It was pretty grungey at
Brampton, but cleared to the north, and we cruised up at 6,500, then
crossed to the Island at 8,500 - clear, and smooth as glass !

We thought maybe Cris would come again, since his GPS now knows
the way ..... and since the weather was much nicer ....

(the airport staff said the only Zenair they recalled was from
The Sault .... but maybe they missed the Stealth 601 ;-) ;-)

In any case, there was no food left over from yesterday, so
we just ate our Nutrilite Bars, dranks some bottled water, enjoyed
a pleasant conversation with Robby, the airport manager, and headed
home about 6 pm...... They are looking forward to our visit on
the 8th ! (Anybody got a Polaroid camera, so we can leave a photo ??)

That reminds me - if you are ordering food bars or supplements,
if your order is over $200, it must be in by 5 pm on Monday, or it
won't be shipped 'til the following Monday !! (under $200 - it goes
in 2 or 3 days, regardless ...)

Have heard from 2 more aircraft that are planning to join us
for at least part of the trip ! Tell your friends there's still time !!

We'll see you all at Brampton on the 7th !!

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by C. Van » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Bob

Are you sure you landed at Gore Bay.? Mayby you glided into the Soo if
you crossed that ittybitty piece of open water (with all those nice little
islands with the wide sand beaches wich look perfect for landing on) at 8500
feet!!
Could it be that the lack of oxygen affected your GPS?

I didn't want to let the secret out, but I wrapped my 601 in foil paper ,
making it into one of those stealth UFOS == I was asked at Gore Bay what
kind of a plane I had, and I told the young lady that it was the flying
type. I don't think she liked my answer by the look of her stunned
expression. Oh well!!! I guess some people can't take a joke.

I am not sure if I will be joining you at Brantford on the 7th. I will
probably wait up for the Rumble Ramblers to pass Wiarton on Saturday and
join up with you at the tail end of the rabble (I keep mis-pronouncing this
little excursion as
Rabble, Rumble etc. ) Seems I do my best work at the tail=end of things!!!

Regards!

Yup !!! That's what the sign on the building said ....

Sounds like we'll have a fair crowd at Brampton on the 7th ! We'll
get our Oshkosh arrival briefing , and "get to bed early, for a
good night's sleep " ;-) :-) Or ..... drink some beer, munch
some nachos, and tell some lies :-) Or - scare ourselves going
over the maps .... :-)

Some of us might go straight from Brampton to Gore Bay, skipping
Wiarton, especially since the restaurant there is still closed !! :-(
Looks like we eat food bars at Gore Bay, call customs & file flight
plan from there, and hop over to Drummond Island ...

We'll catch you over Wiarton - tune in to 122.75 ...... :-)

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by C. Van » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

This is a B-Bob Alert!!!!!!!!

My impeccable sources tell me that our glorious Rubble leader has acquired
himself an un-painted (In other words, "In the raw") Murphy Rebel with an
engine that can make this thing stand on its tail 3000 feet up like its
hanging on a string.
I verily believe that after I e mailed our "glorious leader" that I would
assist him in getting to B C with his tired (or was it retarded?) Murphy
Amphib, he just had to have something that might just be able to match my
601 Stealth.

I know that Bob will tell all and sundry that the possibility of having to
"mayby" get some assistance or commisseration from a 601 Stealth driver, had
NOTHING to do with this new Murphy flying contraption, but I have it from a
very good source that the gleam in his eyes and the bended knees tricks he
did for Anna among "other" things , were done by a desparate man who had to
have the best plane of the bunch.!!!!!

Anyways Bob ----- ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!! - and may your wife keep you
to ALL the promises you made her!!!!

Cris Van

Ramble Warm Up Weekend

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Your sources are correct !!! :-)

I am now the proud owner of a new, 'nude' Rebel - and HAVE to
get <SOME> colour on it before Rambling, as several complained about the
old one, when it was silver & green. Something about these being perfect
camouflage colours for hiding in the mountains ! ;-) (Just 'cause
they had trouble following me ! :-) )

Will try to add some red stripes or something, to make it
easier to see. The big danger is to overflying aircraft on takeoff -
it goes up faster than a scalded cat !! Should be no problem carrying
all that camping gear ! :-) :-)

Although it REALLY had nothing to do with commiserating with
a Stealth driver, I <could> get a tow hook installed, <just in case> ;-)

Anna "isn't quite sure" <yet>, but I <know> she'll learn to
love it (after all, she adjusted to ME ! :-) )
(of course, <I'm> easy to love ! ;-) )

All right - back to picking colours !!!

See you all on the 7th !!

Are you sure you landed at Gore Bay.? Mayby you glided into the Soo
if
you crossed that ittybitty piece of open water (with all those nice
little
islands with the wide sand beaches wich look perfect for landing on) at
8500
feet!!
Could it be that the lack of oxygen affected your GPS?

I didn't want to let the secret out, but I wrapped my 601 in foil paper ,
making it into one of those stealth UFOS == I was asked at Gore Bay
what
kind of a plane I had, and I told the young lady that it was the flying
type. I don't think she liked my answer by the look of her stunned
expression. Oh well!!! I guess some people can't take a joke.

I am not sure if I will be joining you at Brantford on the 7th. I will
probably wait up for the Rumble Ramblers to pass Wiarton on Saturday and
join up with you at the tail end of the rabble (I keep mis-pronouncing
this
little excursion as
Rabble, Rumble etc. ) Seems I do my best work at the tail=end of
things!!!
Regards!
