Things to Bring

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:45 am

Hi Ramblers !!

Have spoken to several of you about camping gear. If you have a
camp cot, or aluminum folding chair that works well for you, PLEASE
BRING IT ALONG to the meeting at Brampton on June 4th. EVERYONE is looking
for gadgets that are light, compact, (cheap), and add to comfort !!

While the 8' x 8' x 6 ' square tent has served us well, and is
ideal for Oshkosh, it is a bit of a pain for the one-night stands of Rambling.
Anna & I have bought something new to try this year - it's a "self-erecting"
tent, called Quickdraw - Vagabond II. We found it at T&C Ramsay Enterprises,
2550 Golden Ridge, #34, Near Dixie & Bloor in Toronto. These things are
expensive - $269 list ($199 at T&C), but might be worthwhile. This model
is only 6' x 9' x 52" high - a bit lower than I like, but it only weighs
9 lb., and can be put up in 3 seconds !! You just take it out of the bag
and toss it - the steel frame unrolls, and the tent lands ready to move
into !! Just add the fly, and you're done !! We HOPE it will make things
easier on the trip....

We'll bring this tent on the 4th, so you can check it out.

Folding lawn chairs make the evenings much more enjoyable, don't
weigh much, and are great to put on top of the rest of the luggage &
tie bungees to, to hold everything down in turbulence. They come in many
sizes - Canadian Tire has some Coleman camping chairs that are quite
comfy. (Also - folding pillows ...)

How many are planning to bring propane camp stoves ???
These are GREAT for breakfasts, but DO take up a lot of space & weight.
If there are several of them in the group, we can cook breakfast for
everybody - a wonderful experience ! If not, we can just get milk &
cereal, and have a quick cold breaky. OR - we can just eat our MEAL
REPLACEMENT BARS, and get going !!

It is VERY important to BE PREPARED, with food and water, as
we often find that 'the place that had a great snack bar' is now CLOSED !
We DON'T want to lose 2 or more hours, in the middle of the day, by
going into town for a greasy lunch .... that's why we ALWAYS have those
meal replacement food bars along. They are tasty, filling, and have all
the vitamins & minerals you need ! Water, of course, is VITAL !
We always have a 1 1/2 litre water bottle ACCESSIBLE in the airplane,
for hot days. Dehydration can sneak up on you, and is JUST as dangerous
as hypoxia - it ruins your judgement & perceptions !!

If you drink too much water, you might have a different problem-
we'll bring a couple of solutions for THAT to the meeting ! :-)
(Zip-lock baggies are handy ! ;-) )

We try to make the flying easy, get it over with, and have
relaxing evening meals. Flying days will run from about 5-6 hours to
maybe 3 hours, alternating, if possible. The nice thing about Rambling
is that you can start at 6 am if you feel like it, or sleep in 'til
11 am, and still catch up to everybody for the evening.... so you
can go when you want, by the route you want, and have a common destination.
Often, several aircraft of similar performance will fly together.

Anna is working on a detailed list of foods, vitamins, and herbal
supplements that we have found useful for travelling. Hope to publish
it here soon, and bring copies to the meeting. It might help some
others on the Ramble to avoid problems caused by bad food, or just
getting to sleep !

Please reply, with any comments or helpful suggestions for
camping gear, etc., as well as whether you plan to bring a stove.

....bobp & Anna
