Hmmmm...... might be missing a screw on one of the tail
fairings, or wing fairings, ... or a bit of loose rubber edging ???

How about slack in the water rudder cables allowing
them to hit the float ?? .... or slack in the X brace wires ?
... or brake line tubing ...

I had a piece of rubber edging come out at the front
of the wing root fairings on FOKM - sounded like the
engine was about to throw a rod !! It was beating on the
top of the wing ... turned back & landed at Chilliwack ASAP !!

Time for a real close inspection - look for wear from
moving fairings or cables ....

The noise sounded like a very rapid oil-canning. ie: the sound of a

other stimulations.

Nothing was changed in the past 12 hours of operation prior to the onset

wheels. I have spent considerable effort chasing this unnerving

I had a rapid tapping/ light banging noise on take off one day and landed
quickly because it was unusual - Peter eventually found it ...it turned out
to be the end of a piece of rubber trim that had come out from under the
wing root faring and it was slapping on the fuselage.

It happened again a few months later (because I keep forgetting to glue it
down) Tom, Peter, and I now refer to it as the "French River Flap".
Good luck

You probably already did it but for giggles I'd also grab all the
control surfaces to check for bearing play and also for up down movement
of the stab at the tips and at the fuselage forward mount. Some Rebels
have more free play in the stabilizer struts than I like.

Thanks Ken. I'm in the midst of putting new bushings, the two
reinforcement types, and adding some reinforcements aft of the hinge
point on the tips to make up for the loss of the ST40 rivets which have
pulled out and cannot be replaced. The bushings were rotating in the
stays which is not good at all. The tips were pretty sloppy and could be
doing it but probably not. There seems to be no relationship between
airspeed or elevator position or engine rpm and the tone of the
vibration. Points to a simple surface vibration I think.

Thanks Jim. That was the first thing I thought of after getting on the
ground. Unfortunately that was not it(at least the one I thought it
might be). One thing though, is the rubber on the lower fairing on one
of the elevators has disappeared. Could be that fairing thrashing around
I suppose and the rubber may have fallen off in mid-flight, which would
explain the sudden onset. I will try to get some replacement rubber. Any
idea on sources?

Aircraft Spruce has quite a collection in their catalog - What width are you
looking for to match the other trim?

Its 3/8" stuff Jim. Speaking of ACS

Start of Rant!

When ACS opened in Toronto it was a boon for Ontario folks I think. But
we in the west got royally shafted. For me to buy 1" of this trim from
ACS would require a $50 shipping bill from ACS. It is cheaper to have it
shipped by air from the California outlet than from TO. Not only that,
they only accept returns from Canada via TO and then lose them in the
return process - even when they were purchased from the US in US$ on US
credit cards. Nice huh. I buy from them in the US but never when in
Canada any more. In other words I very much feel cut off from a sensible
supply source in the summer when in Canada. And it goes way beyond this
description.

End Rant!

Sorry about that - I usually don't rant but this one was well earned by
ACSTO for the last run around I got from them.
Can you suggest any other source?

Depends on just what you're looking for, of course, but "rubber channel"
will get you to some. The paper catalog is nice to have in the library. :-)
