Last week, flying with my wife aboard, we encountered a light gust
(which my wife did not notice) which was either caused by or was the
cause of the onset of a fairly loud vibration noise. This noise seemed
to emanate from the rear of the aircraft, and was loud enough to make me
decide to land urgently which I did.
The noise sounded like a very rapid oil-canning. ie: the sound of a
piece of sheet metal flexing rapidly as a result of stimulation by the
wind. It does not appear to be a control surface because I feel nothing
in any of the controls. The noise in subsequent tests shows up at 60 mph
IAS (approx) and seems fairly constant regardless of airspeed, rpm or
other stimulations.
Nothing was changed in the past 12 hours of operation prior to the onset
of this noise. Earlier the floats had been put back on replacing the
wheels. I have spent considerable effort chasing this unnerving
phenomena. Has anyone else any similar experience and recommendations?
