[rebel-builders] Rebel Firewall

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:56 am

Mine shipped with an aluminum firewall and a sheet of stainless to make an
overlay with so that's what I did. Other than estetics there's no reason
not to save a few bucks and use a thin sheet of galvanized steel for your
overlay.

At 09:34 AM 3/7/2007 -0600, you wrote:
Found another problem with finishing an old kit.
Went to install the firewall this week end and discovered that it is
aluminum.

Checked with Murphy and they confirmed that the old kits were shipped this
way. A new stainless steel firewall is $ 300.00

Anyone out there have a different solution. Possibly a stainless cover? if
so any suggestions as to thickness and type.

Thanks,
Brad (R-195)

[rebel-builders] Rebel Firewall

I too have an older project I'm trying to salvage, and it has the AL
firewall. Can one overlay either stainless steel or galvanized over the AL
within the "inside" flat dimensions of the firewall, or does it need to
conform to the old firewall dimensions around the circumference with
radiused flanges, etc?

thanks.

Drew:

thanks for the reply; next question: if I just overlay, what thickness is
recommended? Logic would say that it wouldn't have to be very thick because
it is being added to aluminum already in place, and the aluminum in place
is/was good enough in many versions.

thanks; again!

Thin!
I believe I've seen .018" steel as minimum mentioned in the Canadian
rules somewhere but after you caulk the edges with fire resistant sealer
no one but you will ever know even if they bothered to wonder which is
very unlikely... I believe I used one size thicker than that simply
because it was easier to obtain locally.

I think mines about .020 but if you can find thinner go for it.

Doug's should be stainless and formed at Serial 778.

I got a formed stainless in 1994 to upgrade my #243.. some in those years /
early serial #'s only got a sheet of stainless to rivet overtop of the
aluminum one that was originally supplied.

Not sure, John ! I think, below #100 ..... although
I think some later ones have been reported...

Not necessarily a bad thing - aluminum + stainless
could be a bit stronger ... Aluminum + FiberFrax could be
a bit lighter and easier to work ....

Easy to test - just try to scratch or drill it ! ;-)

In terms of serial number, how would you define "early"?

Thanks

John

Hi Doug !

It's either a thin sheet of stainless, or galvanized ...

If you have an early kit, it might be aluminum, so needs
a stainless overlay - or FiberFrax ! ;-)

[rebel-builders] Rebel Firewall

Post by ray » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:35 pm

My good friend has an elite and I,m sure his firewall is aluminum as is my
rebel. I should have got to 4 before now but haven,t. I've read tony
bingalis and others and 'know' that its steel or stainless on a firewall for
protection. Now it looks like a cookie cutter operation coming to the
arlington hanger this winter. I have looked at my firewall 100 times and
seen bare aluminum and just tonight the lights came on. Sure glad this plane
is so good as an airplane to make up for some of these shortcomings that pop
up.The 4 is a 2 plus 2 operation in case I wasn,t clear. How stupid does
intumesent paint sound? My firewall is loaded and it one of those hard to
get to places on the plane that is all work and small reward. I,m whining
now so I have to go. Ray

My kit, #207 came with a sheet of SS which had to be cut to size. Craig

Doug's should be stainless and formed at Serial 778.

I got a formed stainless in 1994 to upgrade my #243.. some in those years
/
early serial #'s only got a sheet of stainless to rivet overtop of the
aluminum one that was originally supplied.
