[rebel-builders] Spinner

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

I have the speed cowl and used both the UHS spinner (12", I think) and the
MAM 13". I used the UHS for my old Warp Drive and it was complete with prop
holes, and no problem to fit. It was fiberglass and needed a little work to
get balanced, but that was it. When I went to my current Sensenich, it took
quite a bit of work to get the MAM fitted, but it came out nicely as well.
You have to drill all the holes as well as cut out the prop openings. But if
you were able to build a Rebel, that should be no problem for you either. If
you check back on the archives, there was discussion about how to fit the
MAM spinner. You have to be sure to get the front bulkhead spacing correct.

Anybody out there got some "spinner" info? I have the speed cowl (requires
13" diameter spinner), and will be getting a Prince prop (3.125" thick
with 3/8" crush plate).

Does the MAM spinner work?
Other sources? As far as I know UHS does not have a suitable model.

Mike.

Try the Vans 13" spinner. Works beautifully with the speed cowl.

I have installed the fiberglass UHS, aluminum from MAM, and the Vans one on my engines. I much prefer the Vans. It is fiberglass, too, and I think you can trim the rear a bit if necessary to fit. I had the spacer on my prop, so just fitted the cowl to the prop and spinner. But it will depend on just how much space you do have between your nosebowl and prop. Maybe you can find an RV builder in your area, and check it out in person to measure. Or just call Vans.

After almost a year I'm finally seriously considering a spinner. Other than increasing my cruise speed by at least 20kts ; ) I'm hoping it will improve cooling in the climb. I have a fairly large opening in the nose bowl around the flywheel and I'm thinking enough high pressure air is going to the lower deck under the engine that its disturbing the pressure differential between upper and lower. Cht is fine in cruise, but in climb I go over 400 on #3 pretty easy.
Anyway, I'm looking for advice on spinners. I have an o320/Sensenich. The distance between the nosebowl and prop is minimal, and I really don't want to use a spacer so I either need a forward facing spinner bulkhead, or a uhs style spinner with no aft bulkhead. Has anyone used the aircraft spruce brand aluminum spinners? I can get one of those with a forward facing bulkhead.
Thanks.

Jesse,I installed the BN=3 spinner on my 320 and sensenich, with no prop spacer. The predrilled bulkheads fit perfect, good instructions ,everything went well, take your time cutting out the prop cutouts.I think I used a jigsaw ,anglegrinder and files. Rick R233
