Yes..of course Joel.

I also find with the top one to be sure to run a strip of the buytlene
(sp)
tape across where the bolt holes are before putting the strip down. Then
when you push the bolts thru they will seal in the holes. Messy to put
the
washers/nuts on...but at least the washer will stay in place while you
start
the nuts!

Post by Joel Jacobs » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Okay. Thanks Wayne.
I've been looking around for the Butyl tape and I see it comes in various
shapes/diameters. I've seen 1/4" and 3/8" round beads (on Ebay) and then
came across this:
http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/caul ... /48463.htm
I think this is the right stuff if anyone is looking for it..

I'm pretty sure this has been laid out many times...but here goes
again.

There retainer strip works best with the wide brake edge used as the
bolting
side and the narrow braked edge as the windshield side.

When drilling the side strips you drill into the strip (5 per side is
plenty - top strip about every 3 to 4 inches) and every so slightly
angle
the holes towards the nose as you are going thru the Fus-9 (assume it's
this
number on the Elite as well - The triangle between the door post and
windshield). Doing this (angled holes) will help pull the strip down
tight
against the windshield without making the AN526 head sitting cocked
against
the strip. On final assembly take some 1/4" to 3/8" wide x 3/16 thick
open
cell weather stripping or what ever you can get and stick it to the
inside
face of the retainer strips along the small brake edge section. That
way
when the strip is tightened down the foam will compress and hold the
windshield prior to the strips edge making contact with the Acrylic.

The top strip generally gets bolted right thru the cabin roof bulkhead
flange or just behind it. Works well that the windshield stops right in
front of the rivet row on the roof. The retainer will hold the
windshield
and is just large enough that the holes end up just behind or on the
flange.
If on you have to space them between existing rivets and the trailing
edge
of the retainer will sit down on the roof just behind the rivet row for
a
clean transition.

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

The tape I use comes in about 30 foot rolls and is about 3/32 to 1/8 think x
1" wide. I use it full width on the bottom retainer...keeping it about 3/16
back from the edge (as it will grow in the sun) and I cut it in half to make
1/2" wide strips for the sides and top of the window. Rolling it up in a
roll works well for sealing the gap around the front wing attach area where
the window sits out off the fuselage.

Source for the tape....I just walk into Huronia Auto Glass her i Midland,
that does car windshields and boat windows, hand Norm $10 and he gives me a
couple rolls!

I received and email from MAM yesterday with instructions to contact AeroLP.
I did that today and am the proud owner-to-be of a new windshield. The
$315 freight quote reminds me of the very few reasons not to live in Alaska.
Nice to have that one checked off! Now, back to those damn fairing boxes!

Jeff Micheal

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Jeff Micheal » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:45 pm

From what I remember with LP Aero is that they will drop ship within the
USA, but when it came to shipping across the US/Canada Border they wouldn't
ship unless you had someone to clear customs (broker) prior to the shipment
leaving LP. Just what I recall from dealing with them in the past. The
alternative is to have it drop shipped to a border crossing near your
location, pick up the item in the US and clear customs yourself.

Cheers,
Jeff

I don't mean to be a pain but am possibly going to be neat the factory
and
thought I might get a spare
would save on the shipping

Thanks

I had to call and I guess they already had a PO from MAM. Nice folks,
though, at Aero.

From what I remember with LP Aero is that they will drop ship within the
USA, but when it came to shipping across the US/Canada Border they
wouldn't
ship unless you had someone to clear customs (broker) prior to the
shipment
leaving LP. Just what I recall from dealing with them in the past. The
alternative is to have it drop shipped to a border crossing near your
location, pick up the item in the US and clear customs yourself.

Cheers,
Jeff
