The rubber U channel on the bottom of the windshield is a good idea -
not only stops wear on the aluminum, but mainly cushions the plexiglass
from shocks that could crack it ! Also eases movement from expansion.
I like the Bostick 1100 sealant that the windshield manufacturers
recommend - comes in different colours, at most hardware stores, in
a caulking gun cartridge. It's good for skylights & side windows too !
One builder made an aluminum bottom retainer for the windshield -
looks sharp. Cut up pieces of bristol board to get fit, taping them
together. When complete, traced onto fresh bristol board - and had
a pattern for aluminum. Took some rolling & bending, but it does
look great..... Of course, NO screws through the Plexi - it just
floats in the frame, on the sealant, as size can change well over 1/4"
in summer !
