Hi to all,
I figured it is about time we updated everyone on #426 (N97MR)
Certfication was on 1/14/98
First flight was on 1/6/98
Overall it has been a blast in spite of the few unexpected problems.(yes
some
problems were expected) Our first problem came with the alternator. The
pully
evidently wasn't torqued on tight enough and the nut was spun off and the
pully buggered up the shaft on the altenator. We now have a b+c altenator.
MAM
has been more that great on that. Before I go on I also thought i would
mention that when we went to turn the engine over to obtain oil pressure
that
our starter was defective. It had not shown up in the basic test we had
done
prior but when you engaged the starter the solonoid would not release until
the master power was removed. Not a tough fix but makes you think.
To go on, the plane flies great. The first flight was thrilling but very
uneventful. I was watching my partner Bill Kelley do the flying so I got to
be
excited while he concentrated on the flying. He got to be excited when it
was
my first turn.
It flies wings level in cruise, but the ball is about 1/2 out. It climbs
like
a homesick angel. We're an 0-320 A2b with a 76" McCaulley prop with a 54"
pitch. And at climbout at 85mph it is a consistent 1500fpm with full fuel.
Cruise is (and I DO NOT EXAGGERATE) 105 Kts. thats at 2450 rpm. We did not
think it would be that fast.
We have the tundra tires and the die spring coil suspension with the bowtie
support in the center. It will be on floats so we did not opt for the spring
gear.
It is also nice on the ground which is a help for me, a low time taildragger
pilot.
Were building a test sheet that we hope to pass on to everyone in time to
come.
Build time was 3 years 2 mo. with not much time spent on it in the summer.
The one thing I can say to everyone is keep at it . It is definatly worth
it.

Hi Curt,
Great rundown on your early flight experiences. Keep us all posted. Your
happy feedback helps keep the fire burning for those of us still deburring.
The more good stories, the better, so don't forget about us now that you are
out of the building stage. I especially like to see the performance
numbers. As your test phase progresses, be sure to keep us filled in.
Congratulations again.
