Hi Gang

Acrylic windshield.

I tested a piece with the heat gun. Tried to destroy it with heat and couldn't so must be OK so I tried it on the windshield. All was going great, formed the whole thing putting some fairly sharp bends in it at the wing attach points. The top was sitting off the roof about 3/8" so I applied heat and a little pressure and it became a template for the next try.

Any advise would be appreciated

I get the top of the windshield to fit, and trim the bottom.
Where it does not conform to the fuselage, I drag it in with the tape used when glassing up the surround, and where it insists on staying, the surround takes up the slack.
You cannot get it to fit exactly....that is why we use the surround glassed up right on the assembly.
Plexiglass does not take kindly to uneven heating and forcing.

Fitting the windshield.

I put the heat gun on a scrap piece of acrylic, put a sharp bend in it, no distortion. I then formed the windshield putting some sharp bends in it around the wing attach point, all went well. The top was sitting about 3/8" off the roof so I decided to try to ease it down, put some heat to it and with a little pressure, you got it, a big piece broke off. What is the procedure for forming the windshield as it requires a lot of tweeking?

It's been a long, long time since I did my windshield, but don't recall having to do any heat forming. There was some trimming necessary (I think it was around the wing attach points), and I used a router for that. However, it fit like a glove after that, and installation was pretty straight forward, just following the instructions. The only problem I had was a crack at one of holes I drilled while mounting. Today, I understand it is no longer recommended to drill holes, and you just extend the fibreglass up the sides to create a floating windshield.

Hi Gang:

I went to pick up my windshield at MAM, Elaine was away, someone else helped me. Of course it didn't fit very well but then neither did the other fiberglass tips so I proceeded to make it fit. From what Walter said and Brian @ MAM I figured I may have gotten the wrong windshield. Elaine confirmed this. She was very apologetic and is sending me a rebel one asap.

At what point does one cut and fit the windshield? Before or after engine installation? Before or after Cowl installation?

Hi All,
Mounting the windshield retainers on 3 sides. MAM calls out rivets, I see some have used screws. I was thinking the rivets would crease the heck out of the strap. Is there a better answer here?

I received and email from MAM yesterday with instructions to contact AeroLP. I did that today and am the proud owner-to-be of a new windshield. The $315 freight quote reminds me of the very few reasons not to live in Alaska. Nice to have that one checked off! Now, back to those damn fairing boxes! CW

Drove to the border yesterday to pick up my windshield. Was happy to finally
get it home. The product was very well packed.... but (and here is where my
disappointment starts) when I removed the windshield I noticed that the two
sides ( bends and cuts ) were not close to symmetrical. The left side seems
to follow the contours of the nose rib, with a nice curve to it, but the
right side seems to have an abrupt bend instead. If we end up carving an
inch or two off the product during install, it may not be an issue,
otherwise I think I may have a problem installing it. At this point I do not
have the fuselage built, so cannot do a test fit.

If you have a windshield sitting around or have just received yours, can you
check to see if yours is indeed symmetrical (mirror image). If this is
indeed going to be an issue, I need to get back to LP Aero sooner than
later.
