Yes I can get away with a small hole and will do. However, now you've got me
thinking (scratching my head) with regards to comming thru the front. I
believe
you're refering to the spar. This would make it easier as I've already
drilled the
forward cross vent. It would also make it harder to access for calibrations
as the
adjustment screws are on the outside of the unit. Anyone else have comments.
I'm
going to put the bottom skin on the wing today so have a couple of days to
come up
with a plan of action.

I'd be more inclined to make the hole in the front of the tank
than the rib - if you were really concerned about failure, you could
always put in TWO sensors, so you could connect the other easily later !

Warren, I'm using a Westach 12 inch bendable fuel probe in each wing. I
have mounted the probes in the root rib. The probe has 5 - 3/16" mounting
holes and a 5/8" hole for the probe. The mounting screws thread into a
mounting ring that is on the inside of the tank. The mounting ring and
probe form a doubler at the probe location and do little to weaken the root
rib.

Hi all
I dont recommend trying the inspection plate idea to mount the Westach Fuel
Probe on as there are no moving parts in the tank so I feel there is little
chance of any problems thus no reason to design it to be removeable.
Regarding removal of the probe ... as it is only attached by the 5 screws
and a big bloob of ProSeal about one inch from the tip you could yank it out
if you had too. I feel that if you reinstalled a new one (probe) you would
really need to see what you were doing inside the tank to get the long 24
inch
probe in the right spot with all the curves in it and also to fasten the end
with ProSeal so it doesn't bounce. If the tip touches the metal tank bottom
or
touches water it will read full fuel on the gauge.
Westach will custom make you a probe to your specs at no extra costs (about
$60 each). I used a 24 inch long probe with the first 5 inch portion
bendable
which leaves 19 inches to measure fuel. If I had it to do again I would get
a
6 inch bendable one as there are a lot of bends in the first few inches as
you
must bend it up first then curve it back to the lower aft corner of the
tank.
The 24 inch probe helps take out some of the 3 point / flight attitude guage
errors.
The probe size looks like a hockey puck 2 5/8 dia ....3/4 inch thick ..
with
3 wires coming out the bottom side.
I tested and calibrated these while I was leak testing the tanks. They
seemed
very acurate showing as little as 1/2 gal changes an the gauge.
Hope this info helps ... there is another post on Murphy's builder site that
has more info also.
