Sorry Craig.. away all day for Jen's 6 month scans and check up.

No need, nor do you want to heat them!

Decide where you want to shorten it to... stick a flat blade screw driver
between the springs. Get it open enough to get it in.. and then add another
round shanked screw driver. Use one to hold the spring proper.. and the
other up into the section you're gonna cut off. The one holds.... the other
one bends the "extra" section 90 degrees. It will bend pretty easy once you
get the springs cracked apart. Similar deal to get it open enough to clip
the extra off leaving a full curl +. Just open it enough to get bolt cutters
in and clip.
