I am getting ready to fit the horizontal stabilizer to the fuselage
of Elite 709. The instructions call for removing the AN3 attachment
bolts and drilling to 1/4 inch, one at a time. Then, using the same
procedure to drill the holes out to 5/16 inch. I have found that the
body of a 3/8 drill motor is too big to fit in the space such that
the drill is perpendicular to the brackets. The 1/4-inch pneumatic
drill will fit in the space, but it won't take a 5/16 drill bit or
reamer. Any suggestions on how to drill the holes?

Lynn, you should be able to find a reduced shank drill for a 1/4 drill that will have a bit size of 5/16ths. OR, Harbor Freight sells an 3/8 90 degree angle drill for about $30.

Or try a step drill "UNIBIT"

You want a good tight fit, square, and all that good procedures stuff!!!

This is a critical step....

If no slop is the goal such as for struts, I'd suggest reaming 2 or 3
thou. undersize. AN bolts vary several thou. Precision ones are more
standardized but are still undersize so a test hole in scrap material
may be worth doing. In tough locations I sometimes grind a square or hex
on the end of a reamer and use a wrench or socket.

I had the same problem, and ended up drilling a smaller size with a
shortened drill and hand reaming up to final size - naff job !
