Re: Can I build a plane?

Do it!! You mentioned that you have a workshop, good basic skills and a supporting wife (that's a bonus). You will also have the help of this great builder/owner community, and that is probably the most important thing. Besides getting a great plane to fly, the learning experience is very enjoyable,...

Re: Super Rebel Door Latch

Jerry, if you are planning to go on floats ever, you want a latch system that is easy to open. The cable system as designed by MAM works very well, and makes it easy to egress if you should ever find yourself upside down in the water. I have seen some really bad latch implementations, where you had ...

Don't use these types of toggle switches on your panel

Just thought I would pass on a little lesson learned about an electrical problem that I had on my panel. I went flying last Fri out to the lake, and just as I transmitted my last controller acknowledgement with leaving my airport control zone, both my radio and transponder cut out (on same circuit),...

Re: AD / SB Plastic Amphib Hydraulic Reservoir Lid

Yeah, mine is different, no centre peg. Solid cork to fill the entire inside of the cap, with just two vent holes in the cork near the sides, and the centre vent hold in the cap.

Re: AD / SB Plastic Amphib Hydraulic Reservoir Lid

Just got back from a flight to the lake (1st since my last shoulder surgery) and checked my reservoir cap. It does have a cork liner. Here are a couple pics. http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/wklatt/DSC_0003%20800x450_zpsw6l2ecow.jpg http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s540/wklatt/DSC_0002%20...

Re: Rebel Verses Kitfox

I see the Kitfox factory is now putting in the 180 hp Titan Lycoming clone!! Same with the Just Superstol. Used to be only the Carbon Cub and a couple other Sportplane category SuperCub clones. So if Murphy wants to compete in that super STOL league, that Radical Rebel will have to very, very good. ...

Re: Rebel Verses Kitfox

I can't imagine an O-320 Rebel amphib only being able to cruise at 85 mph, and burning 9 gph!!?? Unless he was using a 2 X 4 for a prop... I wonder where/how these stories get started? With my 360 Rebel Amphib, I cruise at 120 mph on only 8.5 US gph, and can get off the water in 5 or 6 seconds and 2...

Congrats on another milestone. And I agree, I doubt very much you will hearing the T&B with the engine on and headsets.

Re: Oshkosh

With the Malibu, he might have been crunched up too close with all the traffic. That can be a problem with a mix of slow and faster traffic getting too tight. Not making excuses for the pilot, but as we all know, accidents happen when we get distracted or get too focused on something other than flyi...

Re: Speed cowls with Vans Scoop.

And to think that was July 13, 2012(just checked my logbook), and there was still ice on the lake. The previous year, 2011, the ice didn't go off until Aug. And this year the lake has been open since March!! BTW, the trout are getting really huge now in this lake. :shh: (did you hear that, Ray?) I g...

Re: Speed cowls with Vans Scoop.

Speed cowl, yes, of course I love them,... so sexy... But you have to know how to cool them... And I use the Vans airbox, with no modifications to the cowl, just have to install the Vans airbox so the "snout" lines up properly with the speed cowl air inlet, pretty easy actually. I am not sure why th...

Re: Aircraft Rigging

1200 for mine, and didn't change with the 360. I flight plan for 1250 though because of my survival kit and all the junk I haul around. I do think the speed cowl saves a few pounds if done right, and not having to reglass the bottom exit 4 times like I did on my old one. And think you should change ...

Re: Aircraft Rigging

Yeah, if you are getting 2500 rpm static with a 58 pitch Sensenich that is 165+ hp. The normal 160 hp does 2500 with a 56 pitch and 2550 with the 54. My old 150 hp did 2500 static with the 54 pitch and about 2570 in climb out and up to 1200 fpm (solo and 1/2 fuel). But what was really interesting is...

Re: Aircraft Rigging

Yeah, I bent one of my float rudders one time when backing it against a dock, and didn't realize it until I took off again. I noticed it immediately as I went into cruise and was really wondering what was going on for a while with a slight shift in rudder pressure. I flew slower and carefully until ...
